Augmented Reality for Future Mobility: Insights from a Literature Review and HCI Workshop

Abstract There is a growing body of research in the field interaction between drivers/passengers and automated vehicles using augmented reality (AR) technology. Furthering advancements availability AR, number use cases around rises. Our literature review reveals that past, AR focussed on increasing road safety displaying navigational aids, however, more recent explores support immersive (non-)driving related activities, finally enhance driving passenger experiences, as well assist other users through external human-machine interfaces (HMIs). may also be enabling technology to increase trust acceptance explainable artificial intelligence (AI), therefore help shift from manual driving. We organized workshop addressing automotive human-computer (HCI) design, identified challenges including human factors issues need tackled, opportunities practical usages future mobility. believe our status-quo analysis future-oriented results can serve agenda for user interface designers researchers when developing interfaces.
